  • COMMON SPECIES

    There are several species of flea that can be found in Hertfordshire and the rest of the UK but the majority of problems are caused by cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and dog fleas (Ctenocephalides canis).

  • DIET

    There isn’t really much to say about the fleas diet, the simple answer to what do they eat? is blood, blood of your pets usually but also humans if no animals are around.

  • HABITAT

    Fleas will usually be found in places where your pet spends a lot of time and visits frequently, such as your pets bed or basket. Fleas can also infest carpets where they the lay eggs before jumping on a passing pet.

  • BEHAVIOUR

    Fleas go through a four-stage life cycle from eggs, larvae, pupae to fully matured adults. Once the fleas have full matured their primary objective is to feed and reproduce. Fleas are able to jump great distances and so are able to jump from host to host. The bites from fleas can cause a lot of distress both to humans and especially pets which will suffer from irritation and frantically attempt to scratch or bite the fleas in their fur.

  • ACTIVITY

    Flea problems are most common during the summer season when the weather is hot, however you can also experience flea infestations during the winter in warm central heated homes.

FLEAS (Ctenocephalides felis) & (Ctenocephalides canis).

Cat Fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) infest carpets where they the lay eggs before jumping on a passing pet. If a home has fleas from a previous owner who had an animal but is now pet free, there is a high risk of fleas feeding on humans.

Fleas are tiny, sucking insects with adults usually ranging between 1-2 mm long. This makes them difficult to spot on the fur coat of animals but not impossible, with close inspection they will be visible. Female cat fleas lay eggs on an animal host, which then hatch into larvae and feed on organic material (mostly dried blood). In some cases the animal being fed on by the fleas can become allergic to substances contained in the saliva of the flea and the host can lose blood to the point where it will become dehydrated.

Fleas can also transmit parasites and infections to the host as well, causing itching and irritation.
